We are socialized to avoid negative emotions such as loneliness, sadness, fear, etc.; however, this avoidance of emotion can have detrimental consequences to an individual’s overall well-being, as it ultimately results in a drain of energy and unresolved emotional issues. EMS works to break this automatic avoidance response by teaching individuals to deal with the emotions that they have been repetitively taught to avoid through a process that primarily involves being present, and learning how to confront and experience the emotions that arise. The process includes components of mindfulness, emotion-focused therapy, as well as cognitive-behavioural therapy.
